Review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap

The Final Report of the first-ever Independent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led Review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap is now available.

The Review sets out 12 key findings and 17 recommendations. These recommendations help governments uphold their commitments under the National Agreement and shift from business-as-usual to real partnership, accountability, and systems reform.

Karri Karrak Aboriginal Corporation stands with the Coalition of Peaks to call on the government to act on the recommendations and uphold their commitments.

From 1–3 April 2025, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives from across the country came together on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country.

It was a powerful space for truth-telling, sharing lived experiences, and shaping the way forward. The conversations held at the Assembly directly contributed to the findings of the Review.

This marks the first time that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have led a national evaluation of how the Agreement is being implemented on the ground. It places their voices, experiences, and solutions at the heart of the process.

The Review engaged with communities across the country. A clear and consistent message emerged: governments are falling short of their commitments. There is a significant disconnect between what was promised in the Agreement and what communities are actually experiencing.

What's Next?

The Review marks a pivotal moment. It outlines a clear path for governments to follow—while recognising that communities are already leading the way.

The Coalition of Peaks is calling on all governments to act on the recommendations, uphold their commitments, and move from words to action.
